How to Structure a Homepage for AEO

How to structure a homepage so ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews can understand it, extract a clear answer and cite your brand.

Quick answer: To structure a homepage for AEO (answer engine optimization), state who you are, what you do and for whom in one plain sentence near the top, answer real buyer questions in short self-contained blocks under descriptive headings, keep your entity consistent everywhere, and back it with Organization and FAQPage schema.

Answer engines like ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews don’t read a homepage the way a person scrolls it. They break it into passages, look for the one that answers the question they were asked, and decide whether your brand is a source worth naming. A homepage built only for impressions gives them nothing to quote.

What is different about how answer engines read a homepage?

A search engine ranks a page. An answer engine pulls a sentence. That changes three things:

  • Passages matter more than pages. Each block has to make sense on its own, without “this” or “we” pointing to something three sections up.
  • The entity has to be unambiguous. If your homepage says “studio”, your LinkedIn says “agency” and a directory says something else, the engine can’t tell what you are.
  • Proof has to be close to the claim. A number with a date and a source next to it is far more likely to be cited than an adjective.

Research on generative engines (Aggarwal et al., GEO, KDD 2024) found that adding sources, quotations and statistics to content raised its visibility in generated answers by up to 40%.

Which sentence should come first on a homepage?

The definition. One sentence that a model can lift and repeat without context: “[Brand] is a [category] in [place] that [does what] for [whom].” For Yungle that reads: Yungle is a web design and development studio in Mexico City that builds and grows websites for B2B marketing teams.

Put it in the hero or right below it, in real text, not inside an image or an animation. Then repeat the same category, in the same words, in the title tag, the meta description, the About page and every external profile.

How should headings and sections be organized?

Use one H1 with the topic of the page, then H2s that describe what each section answers. A good test: if you read only the headings, you should understand the offer.

  • Turn vague section labels (“Our approach”, “Why us”) into the question the section answers (“How long does a website project take?”).
  • Open every section with the answer, then the detail.
  • Keep project and service names in headings, not in buttons or spans.
  • Add a short FAQ with the questions buyers actually ask in sales calls.

What schema does an AEO homepage need?

Structured data doesn’t replace clear copy, but it removes ambiguity:

  • Organization or ProfessionalService, with name, logo, location, contact and sameAs links to your real profiles.
  • FAQPage for the questions on the page.
  • BreadcrumbList on inner pages, and WebSite on the homepage.

Validate it, and make sure every fact in the schema is also visible on the page. See our glossary entry on schema markup.

How do you measure whether it’s working?

Track three things over time instead of rankings alone:

  1. AI visibility: ask the questions your buyers ask in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and record whether your brand is cited.
  2. Branded search: more people searching your name is often the first sign that answers mention you.
  3. Conversions from organic and AI referrals, measured on your own site.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO different from SEO? AEO builds on SEO. Technical SEO gets your page indexed and ranked; AEO makes the content easy to extract and attribute so AI answers cite it.

Do I need to rewrite my whole homepage for AEO? Usually not. Adding a clear definition sentence, rewriting headings as answers and adding an FAQ with schema covers most of the gap.
